Sterling silver can oxidize and tarnish over time when exposed to air. It can be cleaned with a soft cloth or various silver polishes. Or simply wear the piece often; the contact will keep it beautifully silver.

The gold-plated version: The high-quality electroplating coats this sterling silver piece with a fine layer of gold. Over time, this gold layer can wear off, revealing the silver underneath. Therefore, it's best to remove the piece before playing sports or engaging in strenuous activities to protect it from impacts. – If desired, I would be happy to re-gold-plate the piece for a small fee.
